Downey City Council Artist Recognition: Honoring our Heritage / Honrando Nuestra Herencia

National Hispanic Heritage Month, celebrated nationwide from September 15 to October 15, honors the cultures and contributions of Hispanic Americans. This month of celebration begins on the Independence Day of many Central American countries including Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala – with Mexico’s Independence Day following on the 16th.
For the first time in Downey’s history, we had the honor of curating a featured exhibition at Downey City Hall in celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month, titled Honoring our Heritage / Honrando Nuestra Herencia. The exhibition featured fifteen local artists from the city of Downey and neighboring Southeast Los Angeles communities to pay tribute to the generations of Hispanic Americans who have enriched our society with their diverse stories, traditions and expressions.
The featured artists (listed alphabetically by first name) included: Calixto Shibaja, Carolina Del Toro, Edlin Lopez, Eduardo Viramontes, Elizabeth Munzon, Israel Lopez, Jorge Del Toro, Juan Gomez, Karina Vazquez, Laura Vazquez Rodriguez, Maricela Aviña, Polaris Castillo, Robert Nehemiah, Sergio Robleto and Tamara Ramos.
On Tuesday, October 26, 2021, the featured artists were recognized by Downey City Council for their artistic contributions and were provided with certificates of recognition.
We greatly appreciate the City of Downey and Downey City Council for the recognition. A special thank you to Councilwoman Catherine Alvarez for spearheading the idea of an art exhibition in Downey City Hall and to Councilman Mario Trujillo for his advocacy – both of whom are a part of the Downey Arts & Culture Subcommittee. And thank you Downey Assistant City Manager John Oskoui for his support in making this historic project a reality. We are truly honored and grateful to have been a part of it.
El Mes Nacional de la Herencia Hispana, que se celebra en todo el país del 15 de septiembre al 15 de octubre, rinde homenaje a las culturas y contribuciones de los hispanoamericanos. El mes de celebración comienza el Día de la Independencia de muchos países centroamericanos, incluidos Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador y Guatemala – y el Día de la Independencia de México sigue el 16.
Por primera vez en la historia de Downey, tuvimos el honor de comisariar una exhibición destacada en el Ayuntamiento de Downey en celebración del Mes Nacional de la Herencia Hispana, titulada Honrando Nuestra Herencia. La exhibición contó con quince artistas locales de la ciudad de Downey y las comunidades vecinas del sureste de Los Ángeles para rendir homenaje a las generaciones de hispanoamericanos que han enriquecido nuestra sociedad con sus diversas historias, tradiciones y expresiones.
Los artistas destacados (enumerados alfabéticamente por nombre) fueron: Calixto Shibaja, Carolina Del Toro, Edlin Lopez, Eduardo Viramontes, Elizabeth Munzon, Israel Lopez, Jorge Del Toro, Juan Gomez, Karina Vazquez, Laura Vazquez Rodriguez, Maricela Aviña, Polaris Castillo , Robert Nehemiah, Sergio Robleto y Tamara Ramos.
El martes 26 de octubre de 2021, los artistas destacados fueron reconocidos por del Concejo Municipal de Downey por sus contribuciones artísticas y se les entregaron certificados de reconocimiento.
Muchísimas gracias a la Concejal Catherine Alvarez por encabezar la idea de una exhibición de arte en el Ayuntamiento de Downey y al Concejal Mario Trujillo por su defensa, quienes son parte del Subcomité de Arte y Cultura de Downey. Y gracias al asistente del administrador de la ciudad de Downey, John Oskoui, por su apoyo para hacer realidad este proyecto histórico. Estamos realmente honrados de haber sido parte de ella.
