Zinemaking 101

  • Stay Gallery 11140 Downey Avenue Downey, CA, 90241 United States (map)

About

July is International Zine Month! Learn about the history of zines as a radical form of self publishing and create your own 8-fold zine in this guided workshop.

What are zines?

Zines are DIY, non-commercial “magazine like” publications made in small batches through inexpensive means. Historically and culturally, zines have served as a safe platform of expression for BIPOC, the LGBTQ+ community, young people, and other marginalized or underrepresented voices.

Zinemaking is a simple way to create art, make a story, and/or share ideas, images or information. In this workshop, you will make two zines: one for yourself and one to share/trade to experience the tradition of sharing a zine with your community ☺

Meet your teaching artist

Ellie Cota

(she/her/hers)

Ellie Cota is a Los Angeles based illustrator with a multidisciplinary skill set. Just like a diary, her current work revolves around the passage of time through childhood experience and nostalgia. Since she had no art education or resources growing up, Ellie is currently working on releasing her inner child that never got to create. She is also passionate about giving others access to arts education in all forms.

Ellie recently graduated from Otis College of Art and Design with a degree in Communication Arts with an emphasis in Illustration.
