Position description
We are expanding our substitute roster and are currently seeking passionate substitute teaching artists to join our team! As a substitute teaching artist, you will play an essential role in providing high-quality arts education for our after school program in partnership with Downey Foundation for Educational Opportunities (DFEO). This is an on-call position to assist when one of our teaching artists is absent, a great first step into working with our organization and gaining teaching experience.
About our organization
Stay Arts is a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to broadening arts access and representation in Southeast Los Angeles through high-quality, community-led programming and projects. Our mission is to engage, inspire and empower local artists, youth and families through the arts, creative exploration and cultural expression. We operate Stay Gallery, a community art gallery and creative space based in Downey.

Responsibilities
This is an on-call position, to assist when one of our teaching artists is absent. Classes are taught Tuesday – Friday onsite at various Downey Unified elementary and middle schools. Shift times are between 1:30pm and 6:00pm.
Deliver engaging and effective art lessons based on existing curricula.
Effectively manage groups of school-age children (TK – 8th grade).
Adapt to various teaching environments and student needs.
Foster a supportive and inclusive classroom atmosphere.
Establish and maintain a safe and organized workspace.
Assist with setup and cleanup of art materials and spaces.
Maintain timely communication with the Stay Arts team.
Qualifications
Must be at least 18 years of age.
At least one (1) year of experience teaching art to school-age children.
Flexibility and ability to adapt to different teaching situations.
Positive, encouraging and compassionate attitude.
Strong self-starting, multi-tasking and organization skills.
Reliable mode of transportation to arrive to class in a timely manner.
Preferred Qualifications:
Bilingual in English and Spanish.
Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts, Art Education, or a related field.

CPR & First Aid Certification
Mandated Reporter Training (General & School Personnel)
Sexual Harassment Prevention Training (Nonsupervisory)
Work Conditions
Although reasonable accommodations will be made for those with disabilities, this position may be physically demanding and involves:
Standing for extended periods of time.
Lifting, carrying and moving art supplies.
Reaching, kneeling and squatting.
Seeing, speaking and hearing.
Pay Rate
$30/hour as an independent contractor.
