Thank you, Downey Kiwanis Foundation

Over a year ago, we began our partnership with Downey Unified in hosting students in the gallery through field trips, exhibits, and festivals. There was a lack of creative outlets for students, and that is when we created the Stay Young initiative, a program designed to expose Downey's youth to the arts.

The Downey Kiwanis Foundation believed in our vision and what we could provide, and they helped fund the beginning of the Stay Young initiative. This marked the birth of the Downey Avenue Tour program, which brought a 3rd Grade classroom from each of the thirteen Downey Unified elementary schools to Stay Gallery for a day-long field trip.

During the field trip, students interpreted the Downey Doodle-icious mural by Don Lamkin in a collaborative art workshop (music and pizza included), did a walking tour of Downtown Downey and City Hall, met city officials and local artists, and most importantly, learned about the local culture and history of the City of Downey.

Due to the success of the Downey Avenue Tour Program, the Stay Young initiative was able to develop a strong and ongoing relationship with Downey Unified's administrators, teachers, and parents. A myriad of subprograms were created, from the Stay Young Festival of the Arts to Stay Connected, a student volunteer club that exists at both Downey and Warren High Schools.

This year, the Downey Kiwanis Foundation has continued their support of the Stay Young initiative by donating $50,921 to our organization. The funding will be used to provide the infrastructure, technology, and art supplies that are necessary to expand the Stay Young initiative and all of its subprograms. The funding also allows us to go beyond the walls of Stay Gallery, and into the classrooms to teach art-based educational workshops throughout Downey Unified.
