OSA Final Mentorship Project: Reflections
During the month of February, the Stay team participated in our third cycle of Odyssey STEM Academy’s mentorship program. Odyssey STEM Academy is an innovative and ambitious high school, launched by Paramount Unified School District in the Spring of 2017, that focuses on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). They offer a unique mentorship program that provides young scholars with the opportunity to work side-by-side with industry professionals and gain real-world knowledge and skills.
Our team had the opportunity to mentor nine scholars, who met with us every Tuesday and Thursday for a group mentorship session over Zoom. We had some great conversations with them about the role the arts play in our communities and the importance of creative expression, identity and exploration. We also provided them with applicable tools to help manage stress and anxiety, improve self awareness and cultivate feelings of calmness and presence through mindfulness-based breathing practices.
For their final mentorship project, our mentees co-created a virtual exhibition. Together, they chose a collective theme (personal experience and self reflection) and each created their own individual artwork to contribute to the exhibition. We are incredibly proud of our mentees for each expressing their creativity and unique voice in a way that was most authentic to them!
